The idea of resurrection was not a new idea. The Pharisees believed there would be one. Martha declared of her brother Lazarus, “I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last the last day.” They had witnessed Jesus raising Lazarus, Jairus’ daughter, and the widow’s son when Jesus touched the bier in the funeral procession. Jesus told the Pharisees that there would be no sign given except for the sign of the prophet Jonas: “For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Ninevah shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.”
